Located a short 15 minute car drive away and reachable from the Besenello town centre or from the State Road 350 from Folgaria to Val d’Astico, Castel Beseno is the largest fortified complex in the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region. Built on top of a hill, it spans 250 metres in length and 50 metres in width. It dates back to at least 1100 and has witnessed several battles, first against advancing troops from Venice and then against Napolean’s army. The castle’s interiors and fortified walls have been preserved very well, and you will not be disappointed with the spectacular bastions, fortified doors, interior courtyards, cisterns and underground cellars, and not to mention, the panoramic view of the entire surrounding valley.
MONTE BONDONE
Located directly west from Trento, Monte Bondone reaches over 2000 m in altitude and features a natural reserve, a significant alpine botanical garden (Le Viotte) and the Alpine Ecology Centre. In the wintertime, the mountain is also the centre of intense skiing activity and in the summertime, there are a number of cycling and automobile races.
VALLE DEI LAGHI
Since ancient times, this valley has been one of the principal entry ways into Trentino and contains notable testimony of its 5000 year-long history: ranging from archaeological finds to ancient castles (Toblino, Maruzzo, Terlago and Drena) and noble villas. There are also numerous walking trails available, for example the path that runs along the old mule track from the Castel Toblino up to the little Ranzo church, or the geological trail in Vezzano that connects 10 glacial caves or marmitte dei gigantic, or finally the archeological path in Cavedine where you can see ancient Roman ruins and cave paintings dating back to the Rhaetian period. Moreover, several churches and suggestive sanctuaries line the valley.
