Historical Walks

Depart from the Castello del Buonconsiglio (erected in the 13th century, served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops for over 500 years and boasts famous frescoes in the Torre dell’Aquilla). Continue along via Bernardo Clesio following along the castle’s bastioned walls until you reach the medieval tower, the Torre Verde.
Continue along via del Suffragio (take note of the 16th century Palazzo Trautmannsdorf and the Palazzo Monte with frescoes representing scenes taken from the labours of Hercules) and then along via Antonio Manci, once called the “Via Lunga” or long road, with its numerous noble palaces (among which the Palazzo Salvadori, Palazzo Saracini, Palazzo Trentini and Palazzo Galasso). On the other side of the road lies the Torre Mirana and the S. Francesco Saverio church. Continue until reaching via Belezani (with its unique painted facades, especially the Palazzo Thun on one side and the Palazzo Geremia and Palazzo Alberti Colico on the other side of the street) and turn left and continue until you reach the Piazza Duomo (featuring frescoes on the Palazzo Balduini, the baroque Neptune fountain, frescoes embellishing the two houses Case Rella, and on the opposite side the Palazzo Pretorio which now hosts the Diocesan Museum).

Walk along via Calepina, located behind the Duomo’s apse, and admire the elegant buildings (among which the Palazzo Sardagna, with two caryatids supporting the balcony, the current site of the Natural Science Museum, and the Palazzo Lodron, whose interiors feature several frescoes).

Close by you’ll find the five hundred year-old Church of the Holy Trinity, the Palazzo Roccabruna with the chapel dedicated to St. Jerome , and the medieval tower, Torre del Massarello.
Continue along via Mazzini and you will pass in front of the baroque building Palazzo Larcher Fogazzaro, keep going until you reach the Piazza Fiera. This large quadrangular square was named after the fact that annual cattle fairs were once held there in the past. It is surrounded by the Archbishop’s Palace on the eastern side, by the 13th century old Mura Vanghiane on the northern side and the Torrione Madruzziano on its western side.
